SCHOOL-BASED
INSTRUCTION
Students
with handwriting difficulties may be unable to keep up
with their class work and complete legible writing assignments. They
may attempt to avoid writing and often experience difficulty in
academic performance. Poor handwriting can negatively influence
a child’s self esteem.
HandRIGHTing,
Ink. provides therapeutic intervention to help specific students
improve their penmanship in their own private school during school hours.
This is a unique service that is contracted between the student’s
parents and HandRIGHTing, Ink. Because teachers may be among the
first to recognize a child’s needs, they are an important part of
the referral process.
Referral
Process
The student’s
teacher will need to call the parent to request permission for
a free brief handwriting screening. The occupational therapists
are also available to briefly observe a child in class and/or look
at writing samples if the teacher is unsure if a child is an appropriate
referral.
If the parent(s)
approve of the free screening, then the teacher should complete
the handwriting referral form located on the back of this brochure
and send or FAX it to HandRIGHTing, Ink. The FAX number is
610-649-1715.
An occupational therapist will follow-up with a full screening
of the child and discuss the results with parent(s) and teacher.
A formal write-up will not be done. A brief, written summary will be provided,
however.
In order to
start school-based instruction, parents are asked to pre-purchase
an initial 6 session package. This makes it more convenient for
services to be delivered consistently and uninterrupted. Services
start when payment is received. All instruction must be pre-paid.
HandRIGHTing, Ink. will contact the teacher to schedule a time to
provide handwriting intervention to the student. An Occupational
Therapist or an Occupational Therapy assistant will provide
the skilled services.
Benefits
of In-School Intervention
- Therapists
and teachers are able to work together to provide effective,
on-going strategies to improve the child’s handwriting.
- Parents do
not have to transport their child distances after school to receive
this service.
- Parents
can participate in their child’s handwriting progress by supervising
the homework that s/he brings home.
- Sessions
last 30 minutes with direct involvement with the student. Fifteen
minutes are allowed for teacher consultation and written instructions
for the parent. Parents and teachers are always kept in the loop.
- Parents are
encouraged to keep in contact with their therapist with any concerns
that may arise. A response to your voice mail message is usually
given within 24 hours.
- Once a student
shows consistent understanding of the handwriting process on an
individual basis, s/he may be paired with another student for
instruction. This indicates that development has reached a new
level of progress. The cost for paired instruction is less than
for individual instruction. This benefit is not generally provided
in other settings.
